How to Install LAME MP3 Encoder in Audacity

In this Audacity video tutorial, I will show you How to Install LAME MP3 Encoder. Audacity is a free open source audio editor and recorder. It is the most robust free audio editor I’ve come across so far. It works on Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and other operating systems. Audacity is distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

I’ve been using Audacity since mid-2016 mainly for removing background noise from my audio recordings. I create video reviews and tutorials that I upload to my YouTube channel. I use a Logitech headset to record my audio when I do screen recordings.

Since I got my new ASUS laptop, I’ve noticed that I get a very noticeable background hiss or hum in my recorded audio. I tried various options to remove the background noise, but none was as effective as the method I’ve used to remove background noise with Audacity.

You can download Audacity from the link below. You can check the link below for more Audacity Tutorials on my YouTube channel.

Patents? With the lGPL license and the fact that mp3 is open format, the patents have become irrelevant.

Hi, came across your video while searching for how to combine audio files and link to this. Since there is changes in Audiocity 2.3.2, Maybe need to update your video tutorial. Struggled to install the Lame library and got entangled with the ffmpeg library till I figure out where to download both library.

I am having issues cutting/trimming my audio. I know how to highlight and use the trim feature but I can't seem to figure out how to pause at a certain timestamp and keep it there while I drag the cursor to the next time stamp to cut that section. Every time I try it starts at the beginning and I lose the time stamp. Do you have a tutorial explaining how to do this correctly? Thank you again!

  36. vel527 6 months ago

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. For someone who is brand new to using audacity and pretty much any online editor I really appreciate you.

Audacity version 2.3.2 has an integrated MP3 encoder – no need to download LAME anymore.

I don't see that download link. I only get this in a box: The software patent on LAME encoding library has expired, so now the LAME library for MP3 export is built-in with Audacity for Windows and Mac. Linux users will still need to download and install the free and recommended LAME third-party encoder to export MP3 files from Audacity.
Linux users should use the following instructions to download and install the free and recommended LAME third-party encoder to export MP3 files with Audacity.

    And this:
Windows: LAME is now built-in with Audacity for Windows.

Mac: LAME is now built-in with Audacity for Mac.

Linux/Unix: See the LAME installation section on Installing and updating Audacity on Linux.

I had to go here to get it: https://lame.buanzo.org/#lamewindl
    The file i used is: lame_v3.100 .
